Royalty sees the entire Subway Series at Citi Field!

View from Section 516 Row 3
If you an avid reader and/or follower of mine, you know the King and I were in Pittsburgh at PNC Park when the Mets and Yankees played the first installment of this year's Subway Series earlier this month.
This time we stayed home and we went to all three games in Queens at Citi Field.

Friday night after work I went to Taste of Dolly's for a few slices of pizza. After I ate, I got back on the 7 train for one stop to Citi Field.

Upon arrival, I saw our pal Sam Citron who works as a security guard at Citi Field checking bags. He said and I quote "it's always a pleasure". In addition, he told me how much he enjoys reading my blog. I was so elated to hear him say that. I work so hard to keep it up and maintain it. It's nice to know that people like him really appreciate it. It makes me feel so good. I can't thank him enough for giving me such praise and I know he truly means it from the bottom of his heart.

I really lucked out because I got into the ballpark just before the sky opened up and the rain came pouring down. A minute or two later I would have gotten soaked even though I had an umbrella. It was that bad.
Once I made it up to the Promenade level where our seats are located, I saw our buddy Martin Caamano who was there for the game too. We got to say hello and talk for a little while we waited out the rain delay.
After waiting almost an hour, the game started. The Mets came out with their hitting shoes on as they jumped on Yankee starter Andy Pettitte for five runs in the first inning. Ike Davis delivered the big blow as he hit a ball that glanced off of Yankees' right fielder Nick Swisher's glove and went over the fence for a three run home run.

The Yankees broke the shutout later in the game when Alex Rodriguez hit a home run to straight away center field and it landed in the home run apple that pops up when a Met hits a homer. It was quite a blast. The Yankees chipped away but the Mets' bullpen managed to hang on again as the Mets finally beat the Yankees for the first this year after getting swept in the Bronx, 6-4.

After the game, we went to Donovan's Pub to celebrate the victory. I wound up having a pair of pork chops. They were really good.

Saturday during the day I was able to catch up on sleep and I was able to do other things around the house.
Once I got done, I headed to Citi Field for game two of the Subway Series.

I arrived just before game time at our seats in section 516 row 3. Upon arrival, I heard my name mentioned so I looked up and it was Manny Morales and Marc Beck who are big fans of royalty. They were in their usual Saturday plan seats three rows behind us. It was great to see them.

As for the game we saw, the Mets built a 3-0 lead early on. Once the sixth inning started the roof caved in for them. It started with a lead off walk to Mark Teixeira. I said to myself here comes the beginning of the end. Nick Swisher came up next. He appeared to hit a routine fly ball to right field that should have been the first out of the inning. Lucas Duda who was playing right field, misjudged the ball as he broke back at first. By doing so, he wasn't able to catch the ball. To make it worse, he let the ball get by him so Nick Swisher wound up getting a double. That's not an "error" on my part. The official scorer made an error by scoring it that way but I guess he wanted to reward Nick Swisher for getting his 1,000th major league hit sooner than later. With runners now on second and third and nobody out as a result, Raul Ibanez came up to the plate and he proceeded to line a ball over the fence in the right field corner to tie the game at three. Just like that, the Evil Empire as Yankee haters call them struck back. A few batters later, Eric Chavez pinch hit and he delivered what proved to be the game winning run as he hit a home run to give the Yankees a 4-3 lead. That's the way it ended thanks to the Mets failure to get a big hit in the clutch with runners on base in the late innings. It was a very frustrating and heart breaking loss for us Met fans.

Sunday night thanks to ESPN was the rubber match of this three game set. The Mets had R.A. Dickey pitching against the Yankees' CC Sabathia. The way Dickey's been pitching lately we were hoping for a similar performance. That wasn't meant to be though. The Yankees were able to get to Dickey early as they built a 5-1 lead which included a three run homer by Nick Swisher. By the way, that his 1,001st major league hit. The Mets showed their resiliency to come back as they were able to fight back against Sabathia who wound up getting a no decision as the Mets managed to tie the game at five. In the top of the eighth inning, Robinson Cano lead off for the Yankees and he hit a bomb of a home run to center field that landed in the batter's eye just past the home run apple. That turned out to be the difference again as the Mets fell short, 6-5.

The only bright spot for the King and I was that our pal Manny Bonilla came by our seats to visit us late in the game. It's always nice to see him.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty w/o 6/18 in review

MCU Park - Home of the Brooklyn Cyclones
Monday night after work I met up with the King at Queensboro Plaza which is an express stop during rush hour on the 7 train. We went down to the street to have dinner at Checker's which opened up recently a few blocks from the train station. Our friend Manny Morales told us about it. It's fast food but it was really good. It's nice to know we have another option to eat along the 7 line as we make our way to Citi Field to see the Mets play.

Speaking of the Mets, we saw them open a three game series with the Baltimore Orioles who were visiting Citi Field for the very first time. After getting swept away over the weekend by the Reds, the Mets needed to get back on the winning track. We got to see Vincent Ascanio who's become a regular amongst us at the ballpark.

As for the game we saw, R.A. Dickey was pitching for the Mets. He gave the Mets the jolt they needed. He continued his amazing dominance this season as he dazzled the Orioles with his knuckleball. He allowed just one hit for the second game in a row. In the process, he struck out a career high 13 Orioles as he went the distance as the Mets won the game, 5-0. Mind you the game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when Ike Davis hit a grand slam to put the game away for R.A. and the Mets. It was a great team effort.

With all the excitement, the King nearly lost his voice doing his signature strikeout call much to the delight of the people who were sitting by us in section 516. The Hooligan's were there too. They've moved to section 513 this year. They were echoing the King's strikeout call from three sections away. It was really awesome just like R.A. Dickey's pitching performance was that night.

Tuesday night after work I went to Taste of Dolly's for my pre game meal on my way to Citi Field for game two of the series.

On this night, they gave out t-shirts commemorating Johan Santana's no hitter against the St. Louis Cardinals on June 1st to the first 25,000 fans who walked through the gates. Amongst them was our friend Mike Klein who came with his nephew Joe Klein. As always, it was great to see them. Back in the day, Mike was a regular with us. Nowadays he shows up once in a long while so it was a rare treat to see him again.

As for the game we saw, the Mets continued to win as they beat the Orioles again by the same score of 5-0. This time Johan Santana threw six shutout innings to pace the Mets to the victory. He got help from Lucas Duda who hit a two run home run in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 3-0 and in the seventh inning, Jordany Valdespin added some insurance for the bullpen as he delivered a two run single to put the game out of reach.

Wednesday after work I went to Subway and Carvel to eat as I made my way to Citi Field. I got off the 7 train at Junction Blvd which is an express stop so I could have my meal. After I ate, I got back on the train and I went to the game.

This time we were joined by our pals Phil Butleman and David Sack. It's always nice to see different familiar faces from night to night.

As for the game we saw, it was scorching hot weather wise as the temperature at game time was 94 degrees. It was brutal to say the least. Dillon Gee started for the Mets this time. He pitched well allowing two runs in seven and a third innings of work. He left the game with the Mets ahead 4-2. He earned the win but it wasn't without a scare from Frank Francisco who allowed a run to score and before he finally got the last out with the bases loaded. The Mets luckily escaped as they swept the series from the Orioles, 4-3.

Thursday night after work I went to Coney Island to see the Brooklyn Cyclones host the Staten Island Yankees in the Battle of New York on a minor league level. I would like to thank our pal Vincent Ascanio who got the King and I free tickets for the game.

As for the game we saw, it was a sloppy one. The Staten Island Yankees broke the game open as they scored six runs in the seventh inning to beat the Cyclones, 8-1. They capitalized on mistakes which included a botched up a sacrifice bunt and they took advantage of three walks in that inning to go along with three doubles they hit.

Stay tuned for a special post that will recap the latest installment of the Subway Series that took place at Citi Field.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty meets up with Roadtripper, Bob Deal on Father's Day at Citi Field!

The King and I went to Citi Field on Father's Day to see the Mets try to salvage a game after losing the first two to the Cincinnati Reds. It was Keith Hernandez Bobblehead Day for the first 25,000 fans. Luckily, the King and I made the cut.

Early in the game, we got a visit from fellow roadtripper, Bob Deal who came down from Albany, NY to see the game too. Bob was in Syracuse Friday night for a minor league game and Saturday he went to Oneonta and Cooperstown to see the Baseball Hall of Fame.

We met Bob for the first time in May when we saw the Mets play the Blue Jays in Toronto.

While we were talking, he said he was leaving Tuesday to fly to Salt Lake City, Utah for a week. He was going there because that's the only state he needed to see a baseball game in. His game plan included a minor league game there as well as Ogden which is North of Salt Lake City and Orem which is South of Salt Lake City. In addition, he said he was going to drive to Boise, Idaho to see a game and Helena, Montana to see another. He was hoping to see Sean Lucas, a left handed pitcher who played college baseball at the University of Albany and who was recently drafted by the Cincinnati Reds and now he's playing for the Billings Mustangs who happens to be playing in Helena.

Just like when we met up in Toronto, it was great to hear Bob's travel stories. I want to personally thank him for stopping by to visit us.

He said he's planning to come to Yankee Stadium in August. I look forward to catching up with him then.

As for the game we saw, Johnny Cueto of the Reds pitched well for 7 innings as the Reds completed the sweep of the Mets, 3-1.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Prince gets to take the field at Citi Field before Mets play the Reds on 6/16/12!

Prince watching line up exchange before Mets/Reds Game

Prince  meets & greets Mets Catcher Josh Thole

Since the King and I have full season tickets for the Mets at Citi Field, we occasionally get some Mets Amazin Perks which are advantages of being loyal to the team.

With that being said, my ticket representative Michael Parton contacted me recently about being able to take the field with the Mets as they go out on the field to take their positions just before the game starts.

He told me he had an opening for the Saturday night game against the Cincinnati Reds. I told him I would be available to do so. I was given instructions when to report to the ballpark on game day. He said once you're there they'll tell you what position you'll be going to. I listened closely as Stephen who was in charge read off the positions for us lucky fans. He read and read and finally I was told I'm going to home plate to meet and greet Mets' catcher Josh Thole for a quick hello.

We waited for a short time until we were told to head out to the field through the stands located right behind home plate. I got to stand right in front of the backstop. I stood there while the National Anthem was done. It was so cool looking around the stadium like I was actually playing.

Shortly after the National Anthem was sung, I got to step up to the home plate area. I positioned myself in the left handed batter's box since I'm lefty. I thought it would be appropriate to do so. Moments later, the umpires came out to meet the managers to exchange the line up cards for the game.

I got to meet and greet home plate umpire Jim Reynolds who was calling balls and strikes, first base umpire Vic Carapazza, second base umpire James Hoye and third base umpire Jim Joyce. I told them I hope we get a perfect game tonight. In retrospect, that turned out to be wishful thinking.

In addition, I got to say hello to Mets' Manager Terry Collins and Reds' First Base Coach Billy Hatcher who played for the Houston Astros back in 1986 when the Mets won the pennant at the Astrodome in Game 6. Billy Hatcher was the one who hit a game tying home run in the 14th inning to prolong the agony for us Met fans. Thankfully the Mets found a way to overcome that as they won the game in 16 innings, 7-6 as they advanced to the World Series.

After the meeting at home plate, it was time for the Mets to take the field. Me and 8 other fans got to greet the starters. As for me, I got to shake hands with Josh Thole and he thanked me for coming out. I did tell him I saw him play as a Brooklyn Cyclone. He's one of many that have grown on the farm as they've made their way to Citi Field.

I had a blast being able to meet and greet the umpires and Josh Thole. It was a thrill for me. I felt like a little kid going to my first game.

I want to personally thank Michael Parton and the Mets organization for giving me this opportunity.

When I was done I had to get back to my season seat in section 516 row 3. In the process, I didn't get to hear the King say "Play Ball" which was another Met Amazin Perk we got for being season ticket holders. Since he saw his 7,000th game the Sunday before in Pittsburgh, I arranged with Michael Parton to have him on the big screen to celebrate his latest accomplishment.

Andrew Kulyk and Peter Farrell from Buffalo were there to hear him. They also got to the ballpark early and they were able to reevaluate Citi Field. They did say they were impressed with a number of changes that the Mets made including the Museum and Hall of Fame.

Stay tuned as I wrap up the weekend with another special post about a roadtripper who stopped by our seats to visit us on Father's Day.

Thank you for reading and following along.

The King says "Play Ball" at Citi Field!

The King Saying "Play Ball"
As you know if you've read my blog, the King recently saw his 7,000th baseball game in Pittsburgh at PNC Park. Since then he's seen some more.

On Saturday night at Citi Field with the Mets hosting the Cincinnati Reds, he got to say "Play Ball" on the scoreboard as part of his home celebration of his personal milestone. That was game #7,005 for those keeping tabs.

I was forced to miss it because I was busy trying to get back into the stands after I spent a short time on the field.

As for the King, Andrew Kulyk and Peter Farrell from Buffalo were there to hear him. In addition, his half brother Charlie Casiano was there for the special moment along with his girlfriend Nancy who I met when I finally got up to my seat in section 516. She seemed very nice. I hope the future is bright for them.

As for the game we saw, the Reds took to the Mets again. Jay Bruce set the tone early again. This time he launched a three run homer that left the ballpark to give the Reds an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Homer Bailey who started for the Reds threw eight solid innings of one run ball as the Reds beat the Mets again, 4-1.

Stay tuned for the special post I'm going to do about my experience of being able to go on the field just before the game started.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty gets a visit from the USRT as they return to see Citi Field!

Andrew Kulyk, Peter Farrell with the King and I
Friday night after work I arranged to meet up with the King and the Buffalo Boys, Andrew Kulyk and Peter Farrell aka USRT in other words, the Ultimate Sports Road Trip at Taste of Dolly's before we went to see the Mets play the Reds at Citi Field.

While I was on the 7 train, I ordered a pie for all of us. I got delayed on the train but they all got there just before me so it worked out well. When I arrived, my pizza was waiting for me. After we ate, we took a short walk to Citi Field.

Andrew in particular was very curious about Taste of Dolly's since he knows I go there a lot before many Met games. He was impressed with the pizza he said. It's a nice little local place to stop off before or after a game if you have time and want to save some money.

Andrew and Peter were back at Citi Field for the first time since they went there in 2009 when the stadium opened. They were anxious to see the changes that have taken place since then. Since we arrived just before game time, they decided to go right up to section 516 with us to watch the game.

Upon arrival at Citi Field, we were greeted by Sam Citron by the  Jackie Robinson Rotunda. Once we got upstairs to our seats we were greeted by some regulars who were on hand. We had Vincent Ascanio, Bryan Gilligan, Frank Anichiarico, Phil Butleman, David Sack and his friend Mark who's also well traveled. It was interesting hearing him tell me some great stories from his extensive road trips over the years.

As for Andrew and Peter, they were planning to come back Saturday night too so they said they would arrive early when the gates opened so they can take a grand tour of the venue. By doing so, they could reevaluate the ballpark since their only other visit was back in 2009. For all the details, check out their website.

As for the game we saw, the Mets' Jason Bay got hurt as he tried to be a hero. He went all out on a ball that was heading towards the left field wall in the corner. He wounded up missing the ball and the Reds' Jay Bruce circled the bases for an inside the park home run to give the Reds an early 1-0 lead. Jason Bay suffered a concussion as he left the game. Brandon Phillips added a two run homer to extend the Reds' lead. The Mets got the scoreboard as Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a solo home run to break the shutout. The Reds tacked on a few more runs before Scott Hairston who replaced Jason Bay hit a two run home run to make the score 6-3 Reds. The Reds added a run in the ninth as they won the game, 7-3. Needless to say, Andrew and Peter weren't too happy with the outcome.

After the game, we all went to Donovan's Pub to enjoy a post game meal. We got to hear about their road trip to Europe last October. Andrew and Peter gave us some family history stories since they got to visit some of their ancestors while they were in Germany and Finland visiting and seeing their Sabres play abroad. It was fascinating and heart breaking at the same time. We all need to count our blessings these days after hearing the hell some of their family members went through back then.

Stay tuned as I continue to recap this exciting weekend we had right in our own backyard.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty w/o 6/11 in review

Even though I got an early All Star break due to the schedule being what it was, I still barely had time to catch up on things.

Before I went to work Monday morning I had to get up an hour early so I could return the car I rented from Avis. I wound up driving 850 miles safely.

After work Monday night, I came home to rest up since I was still recovering from the busy weekend I had. I needed to recharge my batteries since I was literally running on fumes. I was so tired and knocked from looking at the computer at work all day.

Tuesday night after work I came home and I started catching up on my blog and paperwork from games I had attended from basketball and hockey season.

Wednesday night after work I wound up meeting my parents for dinner since they were in town visiting. After I spent some quality time with them, I went to do my laundry.

Thursday night after work I finished catching up on my paperwork for the time being.

Needless to say, I could use some more time off so I can relax and live like a normal human being once in a while.

Stay tuned for some special posts that will recap the busy weekend I enjoyed as my baseball fix returned. It was a festive weekend to say the least.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty meets up with Jason Grilli again in Pittsburgh at PNC Park!

                              Jason Grilli
Jason Grilli

Last year, I found out my friend Jean Ann Harrison, was conversing with Jason Grilli through Twitter. As a result, they wound up becoming business partners. Jean Ann was able to set up an opportunity for me to meet Jason in Lehigh Valley.

As for Jason, he was trying to overcome a setback that forced him to miss the entire 2010 baseball season. Jason being a perseverer never gave up on his dream to get back to the Major Leagues.

He was originally drafted in the first round back in 1997 out of Seton Hall University by the San Francisco Giants. Since then he has bounced around the Major Leagues playing with a number of different teams. Despite this latest injury he was determined to get back to the Show.

He wound up signing a minor league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies before spring training started in 2011. He got sent to Lehigh Valley which was the Phillies' Triple A affiliate. While there he impressed the right people and due to a clause in his contract, he was set free and he was able to sign a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates last July 21st. By doing so, he got to be reunited with his former manager, Clint Hurdle who managed him with the Colorado Rockies back in 2008. Jason finished the 2011 season with the Pirates and he pitched well. As a result, they gave him a contract for 2012.

So far this season Jason has been used out of the bullpen primarily in the eighth inning to set up their closer Joel Hanrahan. He's done a fabulous job and he may even earn a spot on the National League All-Star team. If  Jason makes the All-Star team it will be a honor and privilege for him. With all the hard work he's put into his comeback, it would be a dream come true for him. Regardless he's an inspiration for those not to give up on your dream in life.

Since I was going to see the Pirates play I wanted to make sure I got to see Jason myself before the game. Saturday night there was no batting practice so I didn't get the opportunity to do so. Sunday before the game I decided to go by the bullpen area since I got in after batting practice was over. I got the attention of the Pirates' bullpen coach Euclides Rojas and he told me Jason will be out there just before the game starts. With that being said, I decided I'm going to wait so I can see him. Needless to say, I got my way.

The most amazing thing was when I came into the ballpark Saturday night I grabbed a bunch of programs that they give out when you come in. I didn't even look at the cover right away. Ironically when I finally decided to look it at I couldn't believe what I saw. Jason Grilli was on the cover and they had a great article about him inside. When I saw him on the cover, I really got excited. The Pirates recognized his hard work and dedication to the organization by putting him on the cover. What perfect timing since we were there that weekend.

When I got to meet him Sunday afternoon by the bullpen, he was kind enough to sign three of them for me as well as my scorecard. I told him Jean Ann said hello. He told me she's a great lady. I told him she certainly is. He's such a nice guy like Jean Ann told me he was.

To top off the day, since Joel Hanrahan pitched in three straight games he needed a day off so Jason was given the opportunity to close the game on Sunday. He yielded a soft single and a walk since he didn't get any help from home plate umpire Derryl Cousins after a sacrifice bunt. He proceeded to bear down and he overcame the apparent bad call and/or lack of strike zone to strikeout the next two batters one swinging and the other looking to end the game and he preserved the victory for starter A.J. Burnett who pitched well. Jason was all fired up on the mound as he notched his first save as a Pittsburgh Pirate and we were there to see it on the day the King saw his 7,000th baseball game. You couldn't write a more perfect script as Jason delivered the "Perfect Pitch" that enabled him to strike out the competition. Great job as always by Jason on and off the field. Hope he can continue to pitch well and earn a spot on the All-Star team.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Gary Herman

The King sees his historic 7,000th baseball game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on 6/10/12!

The King with Mike Carroll & Peter Farrell
Sunday morning we started the day off right. After we spent the night at Super 8 near the airport, we drove to Kings Family Restaurant in Crafton to have breakfast. We met up with Steve Fekete there since he was staying a hotel which happened to be right up the road as well as our friends from Pittsburgh, Mike and Alicia Irr who said they would meet us there for breakfast since they couldn't make the game. As always it was a pleasure to see them again. The last time they were in the New York area back in the middle of March we were away in Albuquerque and Phoenix watching March Madness and Spring Training baseball so we missed them. As usual, we enjoyed each other's company. Alicia told us that she's officially retired as of February 29th and she's loving every minute of it. Mike, on the other hand, has been retired a few years now and he's loving it too. He did say we're older so in that regard it's not worth rushing it. I do hope they get to enjoy many years of retired life together.

After we enjoyed our meal, we said our goodbyes and we went to PNC Park to see the Pirates play the Royals which was indeed the King's big day as he was witnessing his 7,000th live baseball game in person. What an accomplishment it was for him.

It was reported in Artvoice which is a local paper that circulates in the Buffalo, NY area back in late May that this day was coming sometime in June. This was the special occasion that the King had been waiting for quite some time. He started counting down when he was over two hundred games away.

Upon arrival at the ballpark we were greeted by another special guest none other than Peter Farrell from the USRT by the Willie Stargell statue out behind the left field gate. Peter drove three and a half hours to take part in this historic day. It was great to see him again. He joined the King, Steve Fekete aka the Padre Punk, Mike Carroll aka Sabre Mike and I for the festivities.

It was a fun day to be at the ballpark, which I might add is one of the best around. PNC Park is a modern jewel. This venue is intimate and the scenic views are second to none. The backdrop makes this ballpark what it is. With the Roberto Clemente Bridge behind right center field, the river behind right field and the downtown skyline in the distance right behind the bridge, it's a site to behold. They did a tremendous job laying the ground work for this ballpark when it was being built.

As for the game we saw, the Pirates' A.J. Burnett, a former Yankee, pitched well. He held the Royals hitless for the first five and a third innings but then the Peter Farrell Quest for a No Hitter jinx took over as the Royals finally got a hit by Alex Gordon to ruin Peter's day.

As for the King, he was in his glory especially in the top of the fifth inning. A.J. Burnett had walked a batter and hit another with one out the King yelled out one of his famous sayings. He said and I quote "did anyone say double play." With the next pitch to Jarrod Dyson, a ball was hit right to the shortstop who stepped on second and fired to first for the inning ending double play. That was just what the King had ordered. His loud mouth got the attention of the usher who was by section 116 where we were standing to watch the game behind home plate and he came by and gave the King a nice high five for his brilliant call. With that, the game became official because the Pirates were winning. As a result, his 7,000th game is now in the books. What a way to acknowledge it.

Before departing after pitching seven and a third innings, A.J. Burnett struck out six Royals prompting the King to do his signature strikeout call which caught the attention of three young lads in particular who thoroughly enjoyed his act. It made for a perfect afternoon to cap off his milestone day.

With the Pirates clinging to a 3-2 lead in the ninth inning, we got to see Jason Grilli come in to attempt to seal the deal. He did indeed despite allowing a lead off base hit that fell softly into right field and a walk along the way after a sacrifice bunt. Grilli came back to blow away the last two hitters one swinging and the last one looking to close out the game and he picked up his first save as a Pirate. It was a perfect ending to a very memorable day for the King.

After the game, we said goodbye to Steve and Peter and we made our way back home.

Stay tuned for the special post I'm going to do about Jason Grilli who has overcome numerous obstacles to get back into the Major Leagues again.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty and company go to Pittsburgh and get a pleasant surprise upon arrival!

Steve Fekete with the King for Game #6,999 on 6.9.12
Saturday morning I got up early so I could go to Avis to pick up a car rental for the weekend. I wound up renting a Crown Victoria which worked out well since the King and I were being joined by our pal Mike Carroll aka Sabre Mike.

I got in the car and I drove back to Astoria to pick up the King. We went to where he works because I told our friend Mike Carroll to meet us there since he was taking a Metro North train to Grand Central Station which was a few blocks away.

We picked him up around 10:40AM and off to Pittsburgh we went to see the Pirates play the Kansas City Royals at 7:15PM. It should be noted this was going to be Mike Carroll's first visit to PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

After making a few stops along the way, we arrived within walking distance of the ballpark around 5:30PM. We put a few quarters in the meter which was in effect until 6PM and we were good for the night.

After doing so, we walked over to the ballpark and we went to the box office by the left field gate to get tickets for the game. I asked what the cheapest tickets they had available. They told me all the standing room tickets were sold out. The young man at the window said he had a single ticket for $18 in the upper level. I was a bit surprised by his answer. I walked away and told the King and Mike Carroll what he said. Mike decided he'll buy that ticket. We wanted to make sure he got in first since it was his first time there.
As for the King and I, we walked down the block and we went to the ticket window by the home plate gate. I went up to the window there and the lady at the window said she had a few standing room tickets available for the game. That was amazing because I was just told they were sold out by the left field gate. With that being said, the King and I lucked out. I gave the King his ticket so he could go in since he needed to go to the bathroom. I then decided to get us tickets for the Sunday game so we could just go in once we got there. I wound up getting $10 tickets. The lady at the window was very nice and helpful. She told me the same tickets are $12 the day of the game.

After I got myself together, I was going to go inside the ballpark. All of a sudden, I got an unexpected surprise. Steve Fekete aka the Padre Punk was standing in front of me. I reacted by saying and I quote "what the eff are you doing here". He totally caught me off guard. I told him I thought you were going to be in Milwaukee to see your Padres play. He said he was last night. He wound up flying in to Pittsburgh to take part in this historic weekend for the King.

He spend $300 to do so. What a nice gesture and pleasant surprise it was to have him there with us. He proceeded to get himself a ticket for the game.

I told him he lucked that I wound up walking down to that home plate gate. I normally would have got my ticket by the left field gate. When the young man said the standing room tickets were sold out it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Steve got to find me outside the ballpark. After we spoke briefly we headed back down towards the left field gate and we went in.

After we got our tickets scanned, they gave out free programs. I decided to help myself to a bunch of them since they were there for the taking. The lady who was standing nearby decided to give me an attitude. She asked me why I needed so many. I told her I need them for friends. She looked at me like I was crazy. I thought she had some nerve since I was a paying customer. It's not the first time I've been treated like that when I've gone to Pittsburgh and I'm sure it won't be the last time either. That's just the way it is.

Shortly thereafter, I decided to actually look at the program and I noticed it had Jason Grilli on the cover, I couldn't believe it. I went back and I took some more from a different area. That was a highlight for me since I was hoping to see him during batting practice. Unfortunately there was no batting practice for some reason.
Steve and I proceeded to go to section 116 which is behind home plate. That's where the King said he would be. Steve then surprised him. It turned out to be quite a treat to have him with us.

Steve said he wanted to be part of the King's historic weekend and he was.

As for the game we saw, the Pirates beat the Royals in a very sloppy played game, 5-3. Both teams honored the Negro Leagues by wearing their uniforms. The Pirates wore ones from the Grays and the Royals wore ones from the Monarchs. Ironically a few years ago we were with Steve when we visited the Negro Leagues  Baseball Museum in Kansas City.

This was the 6,999th baseball game for the King.

Stay tuned for the special post that will recap his historic 7,000th game on Sunday.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty w/o 6/4 in review

Monday night after work I had a night off so I was able to come home and rest up for the busy week I had planned.

As for the rest of the week, here's how it went:

Tuesday night after work I went up to the Bronx. I met up with the King and we ate dinner at the 7 Fish Market. After we ate we went next door to get a few bottles of water from the KJY Fruit Market. Jin Kim was out on the street hawking the water as only he can. He's a treat to watch in action. Sometimes he's inside or off and there's another guy there but it's not the same. The price of water is though so you can't go wrong.

We proceeded to go inside the Stadium to see the Yankees open a three game series with the Tampa Bay Rays who were back for more. They were in the Bronx in early May and they lost two out of three to the Yankees.

When we got up to our seats in Grandstand Section 420B row 7, we were greeted by our pal Phil Butleman who was at the game with David Sack, a nice young man who's been coming regularly lately.
This time the Rays faced Andy Pettitte who wasn't back in the Major Leagues yet when they played. They wish he stayed retired based on the fact they couldn't score off of him. For that matter, they could barely touch him as he allowed just two hits and they struck out ten times against him as he worked into the eighth inning as he departed after registering the first out to a rousing ovation from the Yankee faithful. Andy pitched a dandy as the Yankees shutout the Rays, 7-0. With the victory, he won his 243rd lifetime game of his career.

As for the Rays, James Shields started for them but he lasted only five innings. His teammates didn't play well behind him early as the Yankees capitalized in the first inning as they cashed in on an error which lead to two unearned runs. In the fourth inning, Russell Martin hit a grand slam to put the game away for the Yankees. That guaranteed a short night for James Shields who's normally known for pitching deep into games when he's on.

Wednesday night after work I met the King for dinner at Burger King before the game in the Bronx.
This time we were joined by Vincent Ascanio aka the Kid as Steve Fekete aka the Padre Punk calls him. It's always a pleasure to see the "Kid." He's always respectful to us.

As for the game we saw, the Yankees aided by solo home runs by Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano built a 2-0 lead and they tacked on a few more in the bottom of the eighth inning before the Rays finally scored a run during their return to the Bronx as Desmond Jennings and B.J. Upton both tripled to break the scoring drought. The Yankees went on to win the game, 4-1.

Thursday night after work I went up to the Bronx again. This time I dodged the rain drops as I went to the Court Deli Restaurant to pick up dinner for the King and I. I got us Roast Beef sandwiches. I got to see Chris who took good care of me. I took them inside the Stadium we could eat them. Needless to say, they were really good.

Since there was a passing shower that was moving through the area, the start of the game was delayed by 26 minutes.

As for the game we saw, it looked like we had a good game ahead of us as the Rays were throwing David Price who served up Derek Jeter's 3,000th hit last July 9th. As for the Yankees, CC Sabathia was on the mound. The Rays got on the scoreboard first this time as they took a brief 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Yankees answered in the bottom of the second as they tied the game at one. The Rays added a few runs in the third and another pair in the fourth to break open the game as they roughed up the Yankees' ace. They went on to win the game to salvage the series as they avoided being swept by the Yankees, 7-3.

Friday night after work I went back to the Bronx to see the first game of this year's Subway Series as the Mets came to Yankee Stadium to play the Yankees.

Johan Santana was pitching for the first time since he made history the Friday night before at Citi Field for the Mets. Johan showed no signs of wear and tear as he set the Yankees down in order in the first inning. In the second inning however, after he allowed a lead off walk to A-Rod, Robinson Cano ended his latest no hit bid as he hit a two run homer to right field to give the Yankees' a 2-0 lead. In the third inning, the Yankees padded their lead as Robinson Cano homered again as did Nick Swisher and Andruw Jones who followed Cano's lead to extend the Yankee advantage to 6-0 as Johan Santana wasn't long for the night. He wound up going five innings as the Yankees beat up the Mets, 9-1.

Stay tuned as I recap the historic weekend we had as we escaped New York to watch baseball in Pittsburgh at PNC Park. It promises to be a great read.

Royalty follows up No-Hitter with Amazin' weekend of baseball!

History Made at Citi Field 6.1.12
After witnessing the first no-hitter in Mets' history thanks to Johan Santana Friday night, the Mets followed that up with more dominant baseball as they beat the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend too.

Saturday afternoon they shut the Cardinals out again, 5-0 behind a complete game by R.A. Dickey. He threw a seven hitter. He walked none and struck nine. The Mets used different methods to generate their offense on this day. They scored on a few ground outs, an error, a wild pitch and a solo home run by David Wright. It was a total team effort.

Sunday night they were showcased on ESPN Sunday Night baseball. They continued their winning ways as pitcher Jonathon Niese started the game and he threw six more shutout innings. The Cardinals finally got a run on the scoreboard in the eighth inning when Adron Chambers delivered a two out single to end their scoring drought. The Mets went on to win again, 6-1.

Before the game, the Mets enshrined John Franco into the Mets Hall of Fame.

As a pitcher, I wasn't a big fan of his when he played. However he did play his college ball at nearby St. John's University in Queens and he was born and raised in Brooklyn. In that regard, it was a nice gesture by the Mets.

The best memory I had of him was back in 1998 when he finished the season with a record of 0-8. As a result, I remember someone calling into the local sports talk radio show and the person said John Franco ruined his summer. That sums up what you need to know about this so called Mets Hall of Famer.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Royalty gets a long awaited return to the Stanley Cup Finals!

Prince at Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals
Saturday night the King and I got to go to see the NJ Devils play the Los Angeles Kings in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ  with our pal Bryan Gilligan who drove us there.

The last time we saw a game in the Stanley Cup Finals was back in 2003 when the Devils beat the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in Game 7 to win their third Stanley Cup at the old Meadowlands Arena. Mike Rupp of the Devils at the time and current NY Ranger had the game of his life.

This time around the Devils lost the first game in overtime, 2-1 to the Kings.

The Devils played a similar game in Game 2. They fell behind 1-0 again when the Kings' Drew Doughty put a shot past Devils' goalie Martin Brodeur 7:49 into the first period. The score stayed that way until 2:59 into the third period when the Devils' Ryan Carter redirected a pass to tie the game at one. With the equalizer, the crowd at the Prudential Center finally woke up. They were nervous that their Devils were down a goal.

The game wound up being decided again in sudden death overtime. Unfortunately for the Devils, they came out on the wrong side of the scoreboard as late season acquisition and former Philadelphia Flyer Jeff Carter lit the lamp with 6:18 left in the first overtime. As a result, he may have ended the season for the Devils at home as the Kings won again, 2-1.

As for my personal attendance in Stanley Cup Finals games, I've been to 12 over the years including this latest one.

The others are as follows:

1989 Calgary Flames at Montreal Canadiens Game 4
1994 Vancouver Canucks at NY Rangers Game 7
1998 Detroit Red Wings at Washington Capitals Game 3
2000 Dallas Stars at NJ Devils Games 1, 2 & 5
2001 Colorado Avalanche at NJ Devils Games 3, 4 & 6
2003 Anaheim Mighty Ducks at NJ Devils Games 1 & 7

If and when you get to go one of these games, it's a great experience. I've been very fortunate to have seen what I have. For that, I'm very grateful.

Stay tuned for the recap of the baseball I saw over the weekend as well.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Gary Herman

Royalty witnesses history as the Mets finally pitch a No-Hitter thanks to No-Han at Citi Field!

No-Han!
After work Friday night I went to Taste of Dolly's again to have dinner. While I was there, my pal Manny Bonilla called me. I told him I was there. He wanted to join me. I waited for him. We ate then we took the train to Citi Field to see the Mets host the Cardinals.

We went to the Rotunda entrance where we were greeted by Sam Citron which set the tone for a memorable night.

We proceeded up to the upper deck to our usual perch. On this night, our bunch decided to sit in section 517. I wound up sitting in row 14 seat 5. I never moved.

We had a nice gathering on hand. We had the King, Frank Anichiarico, Bryan Gilligan, Ralph & Vincent Ascanio. Phil Butleman, David Sack & Joe Klein were all back for more on this night. In addition, we had Danny Werba and Donald Cohen aka Fuzzy a New York institution as he's known by many over the years.
Little did we know, we were going to see history on this night.

After playing 8,020 games in their 50 plus year history, the Mets finally got a no-hitter as Mets' pitcher Johan Santana etched his name in the history book as he didn't allow a hit as he beat the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals, 8-0 to become the first Mets' pitcher to finally throw a no-hitter.

Despite a blown call by third base umpire Adrian Johnson in the sixth inning, the no-hitter remained intact. In the seventh inning, Mets' outfielder Mike Baxter who's from nearby Whitestone, NY saved the day in his backyard as he reached out with his left arm to make a great catch before he ran into the wall. He managed to hold on to the ball. He wound up leaving the game with a shoulder injury though.

At 9:48PM, Santana got World Series MVP David Freese to swing at ball four to end the game which preserved his no-hitter with Yadier Molina left on deck. Santana finished the game allowing 5 walks and he struck out 8 while throwing 134 pitches to complete the game.

In unison, we all jumped for joy in stunned disbelief. Finally a Met pitcher has thrown a no-hitter.

It was the first no-hitter witnessed by many of the young fans who were amongst us.

It was my first National League no-hitter and my sixth overall that I've been fortunate enough to see.

Here's a list of the other ones I've seen.

1. May 14,1996 Dwight Gooden, a former Met, pitched a no-hitter for the Yankees as they beat the Seattle Mariners, 2-0 at Yankee Stadium. Gooden struck out 5 and he walked 6. Ironically he threw 134 pitches that was the same amount Johan Santana needed to secure his.

2. May 17, 1998 David Wells pitched a perfect game against the Minnesota Twins as the Yankees won, 4-0. Wells struck out 11 that day at Yankee Stadium.

3. July 18, 1999 David Cone, another former Met, pitched a perfect game on Yogi Berra Day at Yankee Stadium as the Yankees beat the Montreal Expos, 6-0. Cone fanned 10 batters in the process.

4. June 11, 2003 It took six pitchers to no-hit the Yankees as the Houston Astros accomplished the feat. Starter Roy Oswalt got hurt and he only lasted one inning. He was followed by Pete Munro, Kirk Saarloos, Brad Lidge, Octavio Dotel and Billy Wagner who all combined to not allow a hit as the Astros beat the Yankees, 8-0.

5. July 27, 2011 I saw my first no-hitter on the road in Cleveland at Progressive Field with Paul Derrick. The Angels' Ervin Santana allowed a run but not a hit as the Angels beat the Indians, 3-1. He walked one and struck out 10.

Stay tuned as the amazing weekend continued.

Thank you for reading and following along.

National Anthem on Memorial Day
Monday was Memorial Day so I was off from work so to speak. It was a day of remembrance as we saluted the fallen heroes who lost their lives fighting for our right to live free here in America. They may be gone but they're never forgotten.

As for the King and I we went to Citi Field to see the Mets play the Phillies in a holiday matinee game.
Our friend Frank Anichiarico joined us so did Vincent Ascanio. We also had our pal Frankie Centola who came up from Philadelphia for the game. We arranged to get him a ticket.

As for the game we saw, the Phillies scored first as former Met Ty Wigginton delivered a two run double in the third inning. The Mets tied it in the fifth inning as Vinny Rottino hit a laser beam over the fence in left field to tie the game at two. In the sixth inning, the Phillies regained the lead as John Mayberry Jr. hit a two run homer to make it 4-2 Phillies. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Mets tied it up again as Scott Hairston hit a two run home run. In the seventh inning, Ty Wigginton got a run scoring single to give the Phillies' a 5-4 lead. He continued to haunt his former team as he hit a three run homer to put the game out of reach as the Phillies beat the Mets, 8-4. Ty Wigginton finished the game with three hits, a single, double and home run. He also walked twice and he drove in six runs. What a game he had. The Mets had a chance to win this game but their bullpen imploded.

After the game, since we had no other games to get to, we wound up going home.

Tuesday morning before I went back to work, I went to Avis to return the car I rented for the weekend. I safely drove 423 miles over the long holiday weekend. After work I went to Taste of Dolly's for dinner on my way to Citi Field.

I hopped back on the 7 train for one stop to get to Citi Field. On my way, I got a tweet from a fellow ballpark chaser, Bill Pritchard who said he's going to the game too.

We wound up hooking up for a little while. It was great to meet and greet him. He told me he was making a road trip to Chicago and Milwaukee in the middle of June. He said the furthest West he's ever been was Cleveland. I told him he was in for a treat. He's going to Wrigley Field to see his favorite team, the Red Sox play the Cubs. He's going to see the Cubs play the White Sox on the South side and he'll be heading up to Miller Park in Milwaukee too while he's out there. I suggested that he get some Ballpark E-Guides that way he can have some great helpful information to guarantee he has an absolute blast. We exchanged contact information so we can hook up again in the future.

We also got a visit from our pal Andy Weinstein who was at the game.

As for the game we saw, the Mets rebounded as they dodged the rain drops that delayed the game just over an hour in the bottom of the eighth inning as they beat the Phillies, 6-3.

Wednesday night after work I went back to Citi Field to see the Mets play the Phillies in the rubber match of the three game series. I was joined by the King who got the crowd in our section going with his signature strikeout call. Some nights are better than others. This was one of the better ones. We also had some other company as our pal Phil Butleman was present and accounted for. He was joined by a nice young man, David Sack who he knows from going to see LIU basketball. We also had our buddy Mike Klein there who made a rare appearance. He was a regular at Shea back in the day. He had his nephew Joe Klein with him. It was great to see both of them. In addition, Ralph and Vincent Ascanio were on hand as they usually are.

As for the game we saw, it was close like Monday afternoon until the bullpen came in when Mets manger Terry Collins decided to pull starter Dillon Gee with two outs in the seventh inning. Bobby Parnell came in and he allowed the tying run to score. The game was tied at three. The Mets' bullpen sprung a leak and the game got further away as the Phillies' went on to win the game, 10-6. As a result, they won the series two games to one.

Thursday night after work I had a night off since they were no games in the area. It worked out because I was able to catch on things at home.

Stay tuned for some special posts I'm going to do that will recap the surprising amazing weekend I had.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Gary Herman
