Royalty sees Gio Gonzalez at Yankee Stadium!

Gio Gonzalez

The Oakland Athletics are in the Bronx playing the Yankees for 4 games.

I'm attending 3 of them before I go away to Seattle on Thursday morning.

I was wondering if I'll finally see Gio Gonzalez pitch in the major leagues in person.

I missed him here last year when he pitched on July 25, 2009 because I went to Fenway Park instead.

This year on July 3rd I was in Cleveland Gio pitched the night before.

On July 17th, I saw him in Kansas City Gio pitched the night before.

So you should know the answer.

Quite amazingly Gio pitched yesterday afternoon against the Rangers so he misses the Yankees altogether this time.

I did see him again in batting practice tonight but it wasn't an easy task.

I had to sneak by the ridiculous Yankee Stadium security guards who told me they were "doing their job" by giving me a hard time.

I still managed to get Gio to come over and sign a picture for me during BP even though he wasn't supposed to before I was forced to leave by the supervisor.

After I got chased away from the bullpen area on the lower level, I went by the foul pole and I found my way past security again and he signed my scorebook.

Gio is a class act. Everytime I've seen him he always comes over after batting practice to sign autographs for the kids.

I continue to follow his progress each start.

It should be noted every time I've missed him by a day he's pitched great the day or night before.

I probably won't see him again until next year so I expect the streak to continue then.

Gio is now 12-8 with a 3.23 ERA this season.

Keep up the great work, Gio!

You're the man in my book.

Gary Herman

Royalty w/o 8/23 in review

Monday night I came home after work to recharge the batteries and to catch up on my blog.

Tuesday night I was out at Citi Field to see the Florida Marlins play the Mets. Josh Johnson started for the Marlins and R.A. Dickey pitched for the Mets. With that being said, I expected to see a well pitched ballgame. Much to my chagrin, neither pitched well. Josh Johnson lasted only 5 innings and R.A. Dickey went 7 innings but he blew a 4-2 lead when he gave up a 3 run home run to Gaby Sanchez in the 7th inning. The Mets managed to bail out Dickey when they tied the game in the 8th inning when Carlos Beltran delivered a clutch 2 out hit. In the 9th inning, Luis Castillo came through with the game winning hit to give the Mets a dramatic 6-5 win.

Wednesday night I was back at Citi Field for the second game of the series between the Mets and the Marlins. This time the Mets fell short when Jose Reyes ended the game by grounding out with the bases loaded and the Mets down by a run. They lost, 5-4!

Thursday night was the rubber match between the two teams. The Mets took a 4-0 lead after 3 innings. The Marlins got 2 back in the 4th inning then they chased Mets starting pitcher Jonathon Niese in the 6th inning when they scored 7 more to break the game open. The Marlins went on to win the game, 11-4 and they won the series.

Friday night the Houston Astros came to Citi Field for the first time this season. They just sweep the Phillies 4 straight in Philadelphia. Mike Pelfrey pitched well again for the Mets throwing 8 shutout innings. Bobby Parnell gave up a run in the 9th inning but the Mets managed to hang on for the 2-1 victory despite getting only 3 hits. Former Met Nelson Figueroa walked in a run which proved to be the difference in this one.

Saturday night the Astros jumped on Mets ace Johan Santana as they scored 2 runs in the top of the first inning. They went on to beat the Mets, 4-1! The Mets had numerous chances to capitalize but they failed to deliver the clutch hit when they need it.

Sunday afternoon was the rubber match in this series. With R.A. Dickey back on the mound, the Mets were able to take the series this time. Dickey pitched well giving up just one run over 7 innings as the Mets cruised to a 5-1 decision.

Special guests this week included our new found friend Manny Bonilla. Manny attended all 6 games with us. His mother came along with him on Friday night. We told her he's a good kid and I mentioned to her he wants to go with us to Philadelphia on Labor Day for the Day/Night doubleheader. She said it's not a problem for him to go with us. After all, he's only 17. I told her he's in good hands with us.

Friday night we saw regulars Steve & Jon Work.

In addition, on Sunday my Cousin Andy joined us for the game. He finally saw the Mets win a game. He came a few times earlier in the season and they lost. He had a great time spending time with Royalty and company. More importantly, he got to spend quality time with his favorite relative. We went out for dinner after the game as well.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Stay tuned for the week ahead.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

Sharon McCard another Ballpark Chaser meets up with Royalty at Camden Yards!

Me, Sharon and the King
Sunday morning I woke up and I put my Blackberry on in preparation for the day ahead.

I noticed an e-mail from Sharon(24), another ballpark chaser who had a change in her plans.

Thanks to the ballpark chasers website, which is also on my blog list, this get together became a reality.

I suggest that you go to their site so you can join up if you haven't already done so.

As a result, she knew that Royalty was going to be at Camden Yards for the Oriole game against the Rangers at 1:35PM.

I wrote her back and said that's awesome. I look forward to meeting and greeting you.

She said she was going to be at Pickle's Pub at 11AM or she would come up to section 336. In addition, she said she'll be wearing a Met hat.

On my way to the game, I did stop by Pickle's Pub to try and look for her but it was so crowded that I thought better of it.

My friend the King and I decided to go into the ballpark.

We went upstairs to section 336 and we sat up high like we normally do behind home plate.

Luckily, we got up there just before a passing shower decided to come through that delayed the start of the game 21 minutes.

Shortly after the game got under way, I noticed a lady looking up with a Mets shirt on without a hat.

I got her attention and I waved to her to come on up.

She took her time and she joined us for the remainder of the game.

She told me she was afraid of heights. I started to feel bad. She said it wasn't that bad for her.

I told her she made my day.

She decided to meet us to and she braved her fear of heights in the process. That made me feel really special.

We spoke throughout the game about our past travel adventures and her passion for the 1969 Mets.

She told me she was from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I told her my parents have a place there.

I told her we were going to back to Philadelphia on Labor Day for a day/night doubleheader.

Needless to say, I told her she's more than welcome to join us.

She said she'll think about it.

I hope she does, I look forward to enjoying her company again.

I asked her if she liked any other sports but she said baseball is the only one she likes.

I told her let me know your needs and wants and I'll assist you to the best of my ability in achieving your goal of getting to all the new parks that you still need.

Like myself and others I know, she needs to do it as cost effectively and as efficiently as possible.

With that being said, she has met the right person who can help her make that happen.

Royalty thrives on exactly that.

When you want the absolute best for the least you know where to go.

Royalty caters to all that are interested.

If so, all you have to do is let me know. I can make things better instantly.

When you deal with royalty and show the loyalty, you'll reap the rewards.

Sharon is a prime example. I strongly suggest that you follow her lead.

If she decided to just stay home, nothing would have happened in a positive light for her baseball wise.

I want to thank her again for joining us.

Thank you for reading.

Gary Herman

Royalty w/o 8/16 in review

Monday night, I went to see the first football game played at the New Meadowlands Stadium between the Jets and the Giants. The Jets were the home team.

As for the game, here are the details.

Tuesday night, I was at Yankee Stadium watching the Yankees behind CC Sabathia tame the Tigers, 6-2!

Wednesday night, I was back in the Bronx as the Yankees beat the Tigers again, 9-5!

Thursday with the Yankees playing in the afternoon, I was at work. After work, I came home to recharge the batteries and to prepare for my weekend getaway.

Friday night after work I was back in the Bronx to see the Seattle Mariners and their ace pitcher Felix Hernandez shut down the Yankees for 8 innings. He struck out 11 Yankees in the process. The Mariners cruised to a 6-0 victory.

Saturday morning I went to Avis to pick up my car rental. I wound up getting a Chevy Impala. I went to pick up the King and our friend Frank who went to the Yankee/Mariner game with us. We parked the car in the neighorhood for free.

We then walked over to the Stadium to see the game.

Before the game, I got to see people I had met last year who needed tickets to see Citi Field for the first time. I arranged to get them the tickets for Father's Day. They were Chris Miller from Stoughton, Massachusetts and his two step daughters. It was great to see them again.

The Yankees went on to beat the Mariners, 9-5!

Eduardo Nunez who was just called up by the Yankees the other day got his first major hit and run batted in.

After the game, Frank decided he'll go to Philadelphia with us to see the Phillies play the Nationals.

Since the Yankee game ended shortly after 4 o'clock, we had plenty of time to get down to Philadelphia so I decided to cut the cost of the trip down by avoiding some tolls on the NJ Turnpike as well as the Walt Whitman Bridge. We drove down the NJ Turnpike to Exit 9 and we picked up US 1 which takes you to I-95 that goes right into Philadelphia.

We parked the car on the street near the ballpark for free around 6:30PM, then we walked over to the ballpark.

We entered through the right field gate where we were greeted in royal fashion by Brenda the security guard and Lisa the supervisor. They always roll out the carpet when we come down. It's always a pleasure to see them and to say hello before we head into the park.

We proceeded to walk around towards the first base side to the elevator area where we saw our friend Jim Lowry who runs the left elevator. We exchanged pleasantries and we made our way up to section 319 where we stood to watch the game.

It was the first time we were seeing Nationals phenom Stephen Strasburg pitch. He was dominating the Phillies with 6 strikeouts until there was one out in the fifth inning. All of a sudden, he threw a pitch and he winced and he held his wrist. He wound up departing the game with an injury.

The Nationals were leading 5-1 at the time. They went on to beat the Phillies, 8-1!

After the game, Frank decided he wanted to go home so we dropped him off at the bus terminal in Center City Philadelphia.

The King and I continued on our way towards Baltimore. We spent the night in Harve de Grace which is around 35 miles from Baltimore at  a Super 8.

Sunday morning we got up and we went to Baltimore to see the Orioles play the Texas Rangers at Camden Yards. Before the game, we met up with our friends from Baltimore, Peter & Carmen Agnew.

They joined us for breakfast at the Eichenkranz Restaurant.

After we ate, the King and I made our way to Camden Yards to see the game.  We parked the car for free on the street in the neighborhood. Then we took a short walk over to the ballpark.

During the game, we got a visit from another ballpark chaser. For further details, check back for a special post that I'm going to do.

As for the game we saw, the Texas Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles, 6-4! The Rangers used the long ball not once but twice. In the first inning, Josh Hamilton, the Rangers third batter hit a 3 run home run to give the Rangers an early 3-0 lead. In the fifth inning, Vladimir Guerrero of the Rangers launched another 3 run home run to give the Rangers a 6-1 lead and they hung on for the victory.

After the game, the King and I took a 35 mile ride south to Bowie, Maryland to see a minor baseball game between the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the San Francisco Giants Double A affiliate and the Bowie Baysox, the Baltimore Orioles farm team. We arrived at 5:50PM for a 6:05PM start. I even stopped off at Wendy's to take out a quick meal.

The Flying Squirrels were victorious in this uprising if you will by a score of 4-0!

After the game, I drove us home. I dropped the the King off in Astoria, Queens at 1:30AM and then I took myself home and I arrived safely at 1:53AM.

I got a few hours sleep and then I returned the car rental to Avis and picked up my car and headed to work fresh as a daisy I might add. I drove 537 miles in the 2 days.

Another Royalty exclusive was in the books.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Stay tuned.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

Eichenkranz Restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland

Eichenkranz Restaurant
This is the only German American restaurant in Baltimore.

It's located at 611 South Fagley Street right in the middle of the neighborhood called Canton-Highlandtown.

The building itself has been around since 1894.

Thanks to our friends Peter & Carmen Agnew we discovered this great place to eat.

We've been there a number of times for breakfast including Sunday when we met them there before we went to the Baltimore Oriole game at Camden Yards.

I had pancakes with bacon & eggs that also came with home fries and toast.

They serve lunch and dinner too.

The food is tremendous and the prices are beyond belief.

If and when you're in the Baltimore, Maryland area, I strongly suggest you give it a try.

For more details, please feel free to check out their website. Here's the link:

For some reason, they don't have their breakfast menu listed on there.

Hard Knocks on display at New Meadowlands Stadium Monday Night!

The Jets made an appearance on that show that aired on HBO.

Monday night it became reality at the New Meadowlands Stadium.

In the first half, the starters played for both teams.

Don't be misled by the final score, the Jets outplayed the Giants and they sent Eli Manning to the locker room to get stitched up in the process.

The Jets starters looked great and it was only the first preseason game. Despite throwing an early interception, Mark Sanchez looked like he was ready to go. He wound up completing 13 of 17 passes he threw for 119 yards and a touchdown.

He spread the wealth around to all his weapons. For a team that is suppose to be defensive oriented, the offense looked rather impressive.

Former Steeler Santonio Holmes was a big factor even though he's suspended for the first 4 games. When he gets to play he's going to add depth to this deep squad.

Shonn Greene looked good and the L train didn't show signs of age in the short period of time he played.

As for the defense, the Giants couldn't move the ball against the Jets starters.

Eli Manning got hit hard by Calvin Pace and wound up getting knocked out of the game.

The Jets led, 13-10 at halftime.

In the second half, the Giants took over mainly because of a guy named Victor Cruz who the media referred to as "Victor Who".

When I heard his name I knew it rang a bell. Being an astute football observer, I remember seeing him play. With that being said, I double checked my roster. Yes, indeed I saw him play at UMASS on November 7, 2009 against Northeastern.

Victor left an impression on me that day when he made 5 catches for 88 yards and a touchdown pass. In addition, he ran back a punt for 10 yards and 4 kickoffs for 25 yards.

Now he's trying to land a spot on the Giants roster as a free agent.
In his first NFL game action, he turned a lot of heads. Apparently, the media unlike royalty doesn't do its homework.

He finished the game with a stellar performance. He made a spectacular one hand grab that lead to a touchdown.

Overall, he had 6 receptions for 145 yards and 3 touchdown passes.

He exploited the Jets second team and helped the Giants runaway with the victory, 31-16!

His teammate at UMASS, Vladimir Ducasse, offensive lineman who the Jets drafted with the 62nd pick overall saw his first NFL action as well. Royalty saw him play too.

Please note during halftime, the Jets had a special ceremony honoring 6 Jet legends from the past by inducting them into their newly created ring of honor.

Those people were late coach Weeb Ewbank, Joe Namath, Don Maynard, Winston Hill, Joe Klecko and Curtis Martin.

The only thing missing on this night was Darrelle Revis.

Once the Jets come to their senses, they'll realize that in order to achieve their ultimate goal, they need to have access to Revis Island.

For everybody who was forced to fork over a fee for a PSL that's the least they can do for them.

Stay tuned throughout the football season for plenty of insight from royalty home and away.

If you want to go, just let me know so I can arrange to make it happen.

Thank you for reading.

New Meadowlands Stadium in Review

Opening Kickoff at New Meadowlands Stadium
The Jets and the Giants have a new home.

Being a Jet fan, it's about time. I only wish they were back in Queens where they really belong.

As for the Giants, they had arguably the best football stadium in the NFL in Giants Stadium.

Instead of the Giants staying in Giants Stadium and the Jets moving to a new stadium on their own, they decided to join forces and build one stadium for both teams.

Every time I passed by the new stadium which is now called the New Meadowlands Stadium, I would cringe.

I thought things would never be the same going to see a football game in the Meadowlands now that Giants Stadium is completely gone.

I honestly must say I was proven wrong to a point.

I went to see the first football game in the new stadium last night.

In the end, I was pleasantly surprised.

I took the bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan for $10 round trip.

I could have taken the train from Penn Station and changed in Secaucus Junction for the train that drops you off right at the stadium. That would have cost $10.50 round trip.

Since I didn't have a parking pass, I didn't think driving and dealing with the traffic was going to be the right option for me.

In the end, I'm happy I took the bus. The next time I'll probably try the train.

As for the stadium experience, once I got off the bus I had to walk towards the new stadium.

In the process, I had to walk on the newly created parking area where Giants Stadium once stood.

It was depressing to say the least.

A perfectly usable Stadium was knocked down for no good logical reason.

It was time to officially move on. So I proceeded to walk into the West Gate of the new stadium.

Upon entry, I instantly noticed a dramatic change. You are now allowed to bring a bag into the stadium. It can't be more than a certain size but that's a major improvement over years passed in Giants Stadium.

I got my ticket scanned and I continued into the stadium.

I was amazed by all the open space there was for people to hang out.

I finally got to the concourse area. It was rather plain and bland. I did notice a gigantic team store nearby.
I went inside and it was massive. People were shopping like it was Christmas looking to buy up their new Jets apparel and other souvenirs from the inaugural season at the new stadium.

I decided to walk around the concourse and see the different food they had to offer.

They had a variety of local specialties that consisted of a New York Delicatessen, a New York style Pizza stand, Barbeque, Hot Dogs and Cheesesteaks.

As a whole, it wasn't an impressive food selection compared to many of the new venues that have opened in the last decade.

I peaked in at the different vantage points on the lower level to get a feel for the game action.

I wasn't impressed with most of the views. When I thought of the price structure, I said to myself you've got to be kidding plus a PSL i.e. Personal Seat License fee too.

I continued up to the next level after climbing the steps to get there. I looked in and once again I didn't see what was so special. The seats were pushed back and far from the game action.

Finally, I found an escalator that took me to the top level.

I wasn't expecting things to get better but thankfully I was actually proven wrong.

Unlike the lower level, where the concourse is very spread out, the upper level was narrower.

Once I finally arrived at my seat in section 312 row 13 seat 21 right on the 30 yard line which was very similar to my Giants Stadium view in section 310, I realized I was in heaven for a mere $105 a game and thankfully no PSL.

Yes, it was a lot higher up than Giants Stadium but being that I've been to all the other NFL venues so I knew what to expect before I got to the stadium.

With that being said, I'm very happy to call the New Meadowlands Stadium my new fall/winter home.

As for the architecture, I'm always a big critic. I remember years ago when buildings were made to last a lifetime. Nowadays everything looks so cheaply made especially when you look up close.

As for the seats, they were different shades of grey and they were made of thick hard plastic just like Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

It was quite the contrary from the "Palace in Dallas" where the seat I sat in with a $129 face value in the corner of the end zone was razor thin plastic.

As for the total experience, I was somewhat impressed overall. It's a very big and bland building with no real identity. They have the ability to change the lighting so it can look like a home for both teams. My main concern is to watch the game from a good vantage point. Luckily for me, I got that. So I'm a satisfied customer but I know they screwed a lot of people when they decided to build this new cash cow.

Welcome to the greedy 21st century.

As for the game itself, check back for my special post regarding that.

Thank you for reading.

Gary Herman

Royalty w/o 8/9 in review

Monday night I came home after work to recharge the batteries and to work on my blog.

Tuesday night after work I went to Citi Field to see the Mets play the Rockies. The Mets scored the only run of the game and they beat Cy Young Award candidate, Ubaldo Jimenez, 1-0! Jose Reyes hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the only run of the game. Mike Pelfrey pitched well shutting the Rockies out for 7 innings.

Wednesday night we saw a another good game until Met manager Jerry Manuel decided  it was time to over manage. The Mets behind 7 strong innings from Jonathon Niese lead 2-1 going to the 8th inning.

Thanks to Jerry Manuel the game got away as the Rockies scored 5 runs off the lousy Met bullpen. In particular, Manny Acosta who couldn't retire a batter and he gave up 3 runs. Instead of bringing his best relief pitcher, Francisco Rodriguez aka K-Rod, to get 4 outs he let the game slip away.

As a result, K-Rod exploded rightfully so in the clubhouse after the game. I'm happy he did. He wasn't given the opportunity to do his job that being to close the door or at least keep the game close so the Mets could still mount a comeback.

As for the rest of K-Rod explosion,  I totally disagree with his actions. He went overboard and he assaulted his father-in-law. He got arrested for doing so and he was suspended by the Mets without pay for 2 games.

Thursday I was working so I couldn't make the finale of the 3 game series that started at 12:10PM. About a month ago, our friend Peter Agnew from Baltimore asked me if I had an extra ticket for that game. He said he knew somebody who wanted to go and they were hoping to see Citi Field for the first time. I told Peter my ticket is available so I e-mailed his friend, John Marek, and I told him my situation.

John arranged to get the day off from work. I told him I would have a friend of mine meet him so he could get the ticket. I want to thank my friend Phil Butleman for being so accomodating in my absence.

As for John, he wrote me an e-mail afterwards. Here's what he said:

Hey Gary, Thanks again for having Phil meet me at Citi Field with your ticket. Make sure he gives you the $25. No really, I had a great time walking around the concourse before the game and taking in the Hall of Fame Museum afterwards. Not to mention the great performance by Johan Santana during the game. Mike had  10 opportunities to use his vocal chords and he did. The location of the seat was great too. All I had to do was wipe off the rain. Take care, John

That's just another example of giving royal treatment indirectly.

I'm very grateful that a good person was able to buy my ticket and he had a great time. That's priceless to me.

I hope to meet John in person someday. Phil told me he was a nice guy. I figured that since he was referred by Peter.

Friday I went back to Citi Field to see the Mets play their division rival, the Philadelphia Phillies. If you remember back in late May the Phillies went scoreless in 3 three games at Citi Field. To refresh your memory, here are the details.

The question ths time was will the streak continue? Yes, it did. Thanks to R.A. Dickey who out pitched Cole Hamels in a old time pitcher's duel. The Mets won the game, 1-0! Dickey gave up one hit to Cole Hamels in the sixth inning. What a performance that was!

For the second game in a row, the Mets starting pitcher went the distance. With K-Rod being suspended, the Mets didn't need him thanks to Johan Santana and R.A. Dickey.

More importantly, section 516 row 3 had some familiar faces too. Steve Work,  a Friday night regular, was present and accounted for but for some unknown reason his brother Jon was missing in action. I asked Steve a few times where he was. He said and I quote "I don't know." As I like to say, "it was his loss."

As for Steve & Jon, see the special post.

In addition, Manny Bonilla, the young man who I met a few weeks ago on July 31st was also in the house. I arranged to have him sit right next to me. It was another great time in the stands. His friend Arjun couldn't make it. He was away due to a family emergency. For more details, see this post.

Saturday night I was back at Citi Field to see the Phillies behind their ace pitcher, Roy Halladay shut down the Mets, 4-0! Pat Misch who was called up from Buffalo, the Mets Triple A affiliate was the hard luck loser. 3 of the runs he gave up were due to 2 costly errors. The Phillies finally broke their scoreless streak at Citi Field with 2 outs in the third inning. They went 38 and 2/3 innings without scoring.

More importantly, I had the luxury of seeing Manny Bonilla again and this time his friend Arjun was back in town and present as well at Citi Field. Despite the Mets failures, it was a fun night.

In addition, I was talking to some Phillie fans who were seated in row 4. They came up from Philadelphia to see the game. I told them about my blog and I gave them my business card. I didn't catch all their names but I remember hearing Andy and Brian.

Furthermore, during the game I got to speak to a few Met fans as well they were Dan Maimon and his friend Tim who said he was from Buffalo. I look forward to seeing these guys in the future at Citi Field.

Sunday it was Sunday Night Baseball at Citi Field thanks to ESPN. Luckily, they managed to get the game in without a rain delay. It didn't really rain very hard most of the night but it was annoying to have to sit and watch the game in it.

As for the game, Jose Reyes was the Mets offense. He did hit a solo home run that accounted for all the Mets scoring. He lead off the game hitting a ball to short left field that fell in for a hit. With Reyes' speed he should have had a double or at least he could have looked like he was trying to get one. Yes, the infield was getting muddy at the time but that didn't stop him from trying to steal second base. He got caught. I was so happy that he did for his lack of hustle on the hit.

Mike Pelfrey pitched well again for 7 innings but the Phillies managed to get a few clutch 2 out hits to give them a 3-1 victory. The Phillies took 2 out of 3 from the Mets. With the loss, the Mets fell further behind in the playoff race.

As for company in the stands, for the third straight game my new friend Manny Bonilla was in the building. He told me baseball is his passion. He met the right people to help him achieve his goals. He's a welcome addition. He said he'll be back during the next homestand.

Rocky Mountain High in October!

In the music industry, they say the hits just keep on coming. In the travel industry, the trips keep on coming.

When you live the life of royalty, you never know what's coming next. I have alot of travel plans in the works but since they're not finalized yet I don't want to advertise them. Once I finalize them, I'll post them up for your viewing pleasure.

In the meantime, in the middle of October I'm getting a Rocky Mountain High.

The game plan is as follows:

As it stands now, I'll be going solo. My travel partner, the King, most likely has to work and he doesn't want to commit with the baseball post season interfering that weekend.

Saturday, October 16th I have a flight booked on United Airlines that departs NY LaGuardia Airport at 8AM Eastern Time and it's scheduled to land in Denver, Colorado at 10:35AM Mountain Time.

Upon arrival there's an outside shot that I may take a chance and race up to Fort Collins which is 70 miles North of Denver to see the Colorado State Rams play the University of Nevada Las Vegas aka UNLV in a college football game that kicks off at Noon local time.

It all depends on what time I get in and pick up my car rental.

Regardless I'm definitely planning to go to Laramie, Wyoming to see the University of Wyoming play the University of Utah in a college football game that starts at 4PM.

Laramie is 150 miles from the Denver International Airport. Fort Collins is conveniently on the way there. So if I deem it worth my while I'll give it a shot. It will be a "gametime" decision.

Sunday, October 17th, I'll be back in Denver at Invesco Field to see the Denver Broncos take on the Jets. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:05PM local time.

Monday, October 18th I'll be flying home. My flight on United Airlines departs Denver at 8:22AM Mountain Time and lands at LaGuardia at 2:09PM Eastern Time.

Please feel free to check back for all the details of how it turned out.

If you want to join me, please let me know so I can arrange to make it happen.

Thank you for reading.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

Don Steiger gets royal treatment in Batavia, NY thanks to the USRT!

Don Steiger throws out ceremonial first pitch
Dear Andrew and Pete,

I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed meeting you two, and that it meant a lot to me that you would take the time to slide across the border to meet me late in the evening on a school night.... :)

I really appreciated you setting in motion a very special moment, along with a major assist from Travis Sick and Russ Salway of the Muckdogs front office, in bestowing the honor upon me to throw out the first pitch at Tuesday's game. And to top the evening thrills off, Russ came over and introduced himself, then was kind enough to share that he and the Muckdogs appreciated my being there and my support. Then he presented me with an official League baseball signed by the entire team!

Gary, thank you again for nudging me to contact Pete and Andrew. They helped make a good trip into a never-to-be-forgotten one.

I can't thank you all enough. I've been on the phone with family and friends back home wowing them with the incredible experiences on this trip which I owe to ALL of you.

Thanks again Gary, Andrew, Pete, Russ and Travis! I'll close here as it's about 10 minutes until the gates open for Wednesday's Muckdogs game. We're going to get even tonight! :)

Sincerely,

Don Steiger

P.S. If you're planning to go to the Buffalo area and you want to get royal treatment please contact Andrew and Peter aka USRT.

Royalty w/o 8/2 in review

Monday night after work I went to Yankee Stadium to see the Yankees play the Toronto Blue Jays. Early in the game between innings they did a  special video tribute in honor of their late Captain Thurman Munson who died tragically 31 years to the day. To show respect, I did a special post. Please feel free to take a look if you haven't already done so.

As for the game that night, A.J. Burnett who started  for the Yankees got lit up for 8 earned runs as the Blue Jays held on to beat the Yankees, 8-6!

Brendan Morrow pitched for the Blue Jays and he won the game despite giving up 5 runs himself. He did strikeout 9 batters in the process.

Speaking of Brendan Morrow yesterday he came within one out of pitching a no-hitter. He wound up giving one hit as the Blue Jays beat the Rays, 1-0 in Toronto. He struck out 17 Rays. What a performance that was.

Tuesday night after work I went back to Yankee Stadium. Ricky Romero, the Blue Jays starting pitcher gave me a rare treat by going the distance.

He gave up a two run home run to Mark Teixeira in the first inning after he walked a batter then he proceeded to shut the Yankees down the rest of the night. He gave one other hit which was an infield single to Marcus Thames in the 5th inning.

The Blue Jays cruised to an easy victory, 8-2!

Wednesday I was working when the Yankees played an afternoon game. A-Rod  was still looking for 600th home run. He didn't waste any more time. In his first at bat in the bottom of the first inning, he finally did it. To find all the details, please read the special post I wrote if you haven't already done so.

That night after work I took a long train ride to Coney Island to see the Brooklyn Cyclones play the Batavia Muckdogs. I stopped off at Nathan's to have a few hot dogs and fries before I went into the ballpark.

As for the game, it was nice and fast for a change, it took only 2 hours and 3 minutes to play. Mind you it took just as long just to get home afterwards.

The Cyclones won the game, 4-0!

Thursday night after work I came home to rest and recharge the batteries.

Friday night I went to the Bronx to see the Red Sox play the Yankees.

It turned out to be a great night for me and for some special people who I met we're visiting NYC for the very first time. Stay tuned because I'm going to do a special detailed post regarding that. It was a prime example of what royal treatment is all about.

As for the game itself, Clay Buchholz of the Red Sox pitched very well to lead the Red Sox to a 6-3 victory.

Ryan Kalish, a Red Sox rookie, hit his first major league home run, a two run blast which was big because it gave the Red Sox a three run cushion at the time. It wasn't the first time this season that royalty saw him play. Back on April 24th and April 25th we saw him play for the Red Sox Double A affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs when they played those days against the Trenton Thunder, the Yankees farm team. He wound up getting a single and a sacrifice fly on the 24th and a run scoring double on the 25th.

Saturday afternoon we went back to the Bronx for the second game of  the series. The Yankees went on to win this one, 5-2! CC Sabathia their ace was dominant. He pitched great for 8 innings until it was time for Mariano Rivera to come in to pick up a cheap save as the King likes to call it. Believe me, CC could have and should have finished the game. Thanks to manager Joe Girardi he wasn't allowed to.

After the game, we went to Donavan's Pub for a nice post game dinner. For more details, please see my newly created restaurant review link on my home page.

Sunday afternoon we wound up in Staten Island watching the "other " Yankees in town play. The "baby" Yankees beat the Williamsport Crosscutters, 6-3!

While I was at the game, I stopped off at the Group Sales table to say hello to my buddy John DeLuca, the Group Sales Coordinator for the Staten Island Yankees. He told me he read my review of the ballpark and he told me how well written it was. With that being said, he made me feel real good. I told him to keep up the great marketing job.

If you want to attend a Staten Island Yankee game I suggest you round up at least 10 people and either call John at (718) 313-1336 and/or e-mail him at jdeluca@siyanks.com. Tell him Royalty Tours USA referred you. In my absence, he'll give you royal treatment.

For further details regarding the Staten Island Yankee experience see the special post I wrote that has the official review of the ballpark which I did for my fellow roadtripper and founder of the website, Stadium Journey, Paul Swaney.

That post is also conveniently located on my home page right under the about me segment. Just click on it and it will pop right up for your viewing pleasure..

In addition, if you want to have a better idea of what to expect from all the different ballparks around the country I strongly suggest you take a good look at Stadium Journey when you have some spare time. Paul and his partners as well as other sports enthusiasts have done a tremendous job scouting out for these places to give people tips and a real feel before they go so they know what they should expect. In this day and age, the last thing you want to do is waste your precious time.

Here's the link:

http://www.stadiumjourney.com/

I'm a big believer in the "5P's" that being "prior planning prevents poor performance".

Please feel free to take my advice and wait and see how it works wonders for you. I know for a fact it does for me.

After we left Staten Island, it was time to return to the Bronx for the Sunday night ESPN game between the Yankees and the Red Sox.

Upon arrival, we found out that scheduled starting pitcher A.J. Burnett was scratched due to an injury. Dustin Moseley took his place. He pitched well for 6 and a third innings before giving way to the bullpen which culminated with Mariano Rivera throwing one pitch to secure the last out as the Yankees won again, 7-2!

In the second inning, Derek Jeter got a run scoring single. More importantly, it was the 2,874th hit of his major league career which allowed him to pass the legendary Babe Ruth on the all time hits list.

With all that said, another week of my life is in the books.

Don't forget to check back for that special post I'm going to write.

Thank you for reading and following along.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

Royal treatment for visitors from Burns, Oregon

Me & Kevin Feist
On Friday, August 6th, I was at Yankee Stadium watching the Red Sox play the Yankees.

During the game, I noticed a guy coming up in our section wearing an Oregon Ducks shirt.

I decided to ask him if he knew what time the Ducks were playing on September 4th against New Mexico.
He said he didn't know. I told him that the New Mexico website had the game starting at 12:30PM Pacific Time. The Ducks website said it was TBA.

He said 12:30 sounded like it should be right.

We continued to talk during the game. I told him I'm planning to go to that game when I'm out in the Northwest that weekend. He said his son Caleb will be going too. I plan to meet him there.

He wound sitting right in the row behind me. We exchanged contact information.

He said and I quote "it's a small world".

He told me that he and his family were visiting New York for the very first time.

He said they were from Burns, Oregon which is a small town of around 4,000 people in the Southeast corner.

His name was Kevin Feist. He was with his wife Toni, and their 3 children, 2 boys Caleb and Austin and a girl, Carli. In addition, they were accompanied by his brother-in-law Bob and his wife Linda who were from Carson City, Nevada.

Kevin told me that his son Caleb is going to be a freshman this fall. He's going to school at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon.

Ironically, his son plays baseball and his college coach is going to be former Yankee Scott Brosius.

Kevin said that his sister is good friends with Scott Brosius.

Kevin also mentioned he's a baseball coach too. In addition, he said he knew Kellen Clemens since he coached him in high school in Burns who also went to school at the University of Oregon and is the backup quarterback for the Jets.

When I saw the Jets play the other night, Kellen Clemens came in and I instantly thought of Kevin.

We spoke until the end of the game. I said to myself I'll going to take these people back to their hotel in Midtown Manhattan.

It was a rare night where I actually had time on my hands.

So after the game, I took pictures of the whole family. Then I escorted them to the subway.

Normally I take the 4 train to go home but since they needed the D train, I decided I'll go that way instead.

Fortunately I did for their sake, we walked towards the entrance of the stairway to the D train and it was wall to wall people.

I told them to follow me, we went upstairs towards the 4 train. I know there's a way to get back downstairs to get the D train.

It seemed like a longer way around until we got back downstairs inside the subway station and we saw the mob of people still trying to get to the turnstiles.

If we stayed where we were who knows how long we would have had to wait just to get into the subway station.

These people were amazed how I knew exactly how to out maneuver the crowd.

We proceeded to get right on the D train and off to Midtown we went.

We got off the train by Rockefeller Center. I decided to walk with them to their hotel so they wouldn't get lost.

I took them all right to the lobby of the Hilton Garden hotel where they were staying.

That's how royalty gives perfect strangers the royal treatment.

As a result, they were all very grateful for my kindness.

I had some rare spare time so I wanted to make good use of it and I did.

I did a good deed and I'm very proud of it.

These people contacted me before they left to go back home and they told me what a great time they had here and they look forward to coming back someday.

I hope they do, it will be an absolute pleasure to accomodate these people again.

I want to thank them for giving me that opportunity to do so.

Labor Day Weekend in the Great Northwest!

Here's the game plan:

Thursday September 2nd I'm flying solo from NY LaGuardia airport at 7:25AM Eastern Time to Seattle with a layover in Houston arriving in Sea-Tac at 2:05PM Pacific Time

                                       Indians at Mariners 7:10PM

Friday, September 3rd Go to Mt. Rainier National Park

Las Vegas 51's at Portland Beavers 7:05PM

Saturday September 4th New Mexico Lobos at Oregon Ducks 12:30PM

Eugene Emeralds at Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 7:05PM

Sunday September 5th Indians at Mariners 1:10PM

Fly home 10:15PM Pacific Time flight with a layover in Philadelphia arrive at NY LaGuardia 8:06AM Eastern Time Monday morning (Labor Day)

I'll go home to take a shower, eat breakfast and rent a car from Avis for the day and I'll pick up the King as we go back to Philadelphia to see the Phillies play the Marlins in a day-night separate admission doubleheader on Labor Day.

Please check back for all the details as it unfolded upon my return.

If you're interested in joining forces for some royal treatment don't hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for reading.

Gary Herman

A great review of Citi Field by fellow road tripper, Sean Rowland

In a previous post that I wrote I had the privilege and honor of meeting a fellow road tripper. His name was Sean Rowland.

Please see the link below for his take on his first visit to Citi Field:

http://stadiumandarenavisits.com/2010/08/04/wrapping-up-a-visit-to-citi-field/

In addition, I strongly suggest that you check out his website, stadiums and arena visits.

Here's the link:

http://stadiumandarenavisits.com/

I  hope you enjoy his views.

Thank you for checking in.

Yours truly,

Prince Charming

A-Rod hit number 600 today 8/4: The Prince missed again!

Alex Rodriguez aka A-Rod finally hit his 600th home run in the major leagues in the first inning at New Yankee Stadium off Shawn Marcum of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Since I was working today and I wasn't able to take a "long" lunch, I missed out on baseball history.

I was informed by a text message from my friend and royalty regular Rich Wolber aka Staten Island Rich was fortunate to be there.

He said and I quote "That's why we go to the games."

It's not the first time this has happened to me and it won't be the last time either.

The King witnessed it in person too.

He said it landed in Monument Park in straight away center field per a voice message he left me.

Ironically three years ago to the day on August 4, 2007, A-Rod hit his 500th career home run at Old Yankee Stadium.

Did the Prince see it you ask?

No, the King and I were on the road in the Midwest that weekend.

In matter of fact, we saw the Cleveland Indians play the Minnesota Twins in the Metrodome that Saturday afternoon.

It's was part of our annual trip to Wrigley Field.
We also went to Miller Park on that excursion too.

Lately my so called good luck hasn't been that good.

In two other posts I wrote recently about Oakland Athletics pitcher Gio Gonzalez who started a game in Cleveland and Kansas City on two different Friday nights.

The Prince shows up the next night both times.

On the other hand, 25 years ago today back on August 4, 1985, I did witness history in person.

I saw Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver win his 300th major league game at the Old Yankee Stadium when he beat the Yankees as a member of the Chicago White Sox.

Seaver ended his career with 311 wins.

Ironically the King who I didn't know at the time but who I met shortly thereafter missed that game.

As they say, you win some and you lose some.

You can't win them all.

I've attended almost 4,000 baseball games live in my lifetime so I've seen my share of history over the years.

The life of royalty still has its privileges.

In the future, please stay in touch through my blog to see what I have in store.

Are you planning to attend a game at Yankee Stadium or anywhere else for that matter? If so, this post is a must read for you!

Last year the Yankees opened a new ballpark in the Bronx across the street from the old one which is completely gone.

If you were fortunate enough to say you saw a game at the old one, consider yourself lucky.

With the cost of tickets to a game sky rocketing at such a rapid clip these days, fewer people can afford to go.

If they do go, they don't go nearly as often as they used to and that's probably not by choice.

People say they're priced out.

That statement is true to a point.

This is where a true baseball fan and/or an astute person takes matters into their own hands.

They say to themselves I want to see X amount of games but I only can afford to spend X amount of money to make it happen.

I need to do something about it in order for that to change.

Well I do that all the time believe it or not, I need to minimize my cost to maximize my enjoyment.

One of the best ways to do this is as follows:

We all have to eat and drink everyday to survive.

Who says that when you go to a game you have to buy anything in the ballpark?

As the King is quick to say, "Nobody's putting a gun to your head".

I strongly suggest that you take some advice from me and other people who support the local businesses around Yankee Stadium.

The best way to thank me and my fellow road trippers is to visit their different websites and blogs which can be found on my blog list.

By working together, we can make the national pastime affordable once again.

It can be a win win situation for everybody.

Wait and see.

Remembering Thurman Munson 8/2/79

The Captain

During the Yankee/Blue Jay game, there was a brief video tribute to remember a Yankee legend.

It started with a distinct voice now batting catcher number 15 Thurman Munson.

They proceeded to show highlights of the Captain before his untimely death 31 years ago.

I remember being at sleep away camp when I heard the sad news.

Thurman got killed when his private plane crashed near his home in Canton, Ohio.

They did name the ballpark there in the Canton-Akron area after him.

The Cleveland Indians Double A farm team in the Eastern League played there.

I did see a game there as well.

Since then the team moved to downtown Akron into a beautiful new modern ballpark.

Just like we don't forget the tragic day of 9/11, the Yankees and their fans don't forget their Captain.

Thurman may you rest in peace.

Thank for all the memories you gave us during your playing days.

He did play for the 1977 and 1978 World Championship teams.

He may be gone but he's not forgotten.

Royalty remembers.

Royalty w/o 7/26 in review

Monday I decided to come home after work to catch up on my blog since I was falling too far behind.

I was so tempted to head back to Staten Island after work where I could have indulged in an all you can eat deal while watching the SI Yankees play. I wisely thought better of it.

For a more in-depth analysis of the Staten Island Yankee experience please feel free in the near future to check out the following website, http://www.stadiumjourney.com/ where I just did a review for my buddy Paul Swaney, their President and general partner who resides in Chicago, Illinois.

In addition, his site has tremendous reviews to give sports travelers like myself everything you need to know about getting places and they offer different opinions and views from all kinds of fans as well.

Please feel free to take a look in your spare time.

Be careful you'll get hooked.

Unlike Doc & Darryl, that's a good thing.

Tuesday night I went to Citi Field to see the Mets play the St. Louis Cardinals.

With their ace, Adam Wainwright on the mound following a dreadful 2-9 west Coast trip I thought the Mets were in for a long night.

Thankfully they proved me wrong on this particular night.

The Mets decked the Cards, 8-2!

The Mets rediscovered how to hit the ball within the friendly confines of Citi Field.

Believe me, I really wish I was in Wrigley Field.

Speaking of Wrigley Field, Andrew Van Cleve, who happens to live up the block from there put me in contact with Paul Swaney.

Andrew is another road tripper who I met back in May.

His mantra is Have game? Will travel!

Here's the link to his website site and blog which can also be found on my blog roll:

http://www.anygame-anywhere.com/

Wednesday night I was back at Citi Field which started out looking like a long night then the game started speeding up in the middle innings.

The Mets with Johan Santana pitching fell behind 6-0 before they even swung the bat.

They proceeded to get 2 runs back in the bottom half of the first inning.

The Cardinals added a run in the sixth and the Mets matched them with one of their own.

Going to the bottom of the eighth inning the Mets trailed by 4, 7-3. They managed to tie the score at 7.

The game wound up going 13 innings before they lost this one, 8-7.

My friend Don Steiger and his son Donnie who I saw in St. Louis a few weeks ago were relieved since they requested that I deliver them a token win.

Royalty came through again.

If you want to read up on these special people please go to my previous post called "The Gateway to the West".

Thursday night thankfully after making it through another day of work. I came home to rest and recharge the batteries.

Friday night it was back to Citi Field and a visit to Donovan's Pub afterwards.

The Arizona Diamondbacks were in town to face the Mets.

The Mets wound up losing to one of the worst teams in baseball partially thanks to their genius manager Jerry Manuel.

But like the King said he did what all 29 other mnagers would have done.

He brought a lefty pitcher in to face a lefty batter with two outs in the top of the sixth ining.

Mind you the lefty lefty overmanaging nonsense blew up in his face.

Raul Valdes in relief of Mike "shaky" Pelfrey faced 4 batters and gave up 4 hits including two home runs to put this game out of reach.

The Mets added a run but they still lost, 9-6.

It wasn't a total loss for Royalty.

As you can tell in a post I did about a few guys who had bought tickets for the Friday games from a season ticket holder.

Saturday night it back to you know where by now.

Let it be known the Mets came into this game 0-4 against the Diamondbacks this season.

The question was will tonight be the night?

The answer was yes!

The Mets found a way to finally rattle those snakes, 5-4 when Carlos Beltran hit a game winning sacrifice fly in the 9th inning.

It was a fun night throughout as I noted in a separate post when Royalty got to see some new found company.

We attract fans of all ages.

Sunday we were back.

At least this time we were treated to a pregame ceremony which I did a special post about.

Please check it out for further details.

In addition, a fellow roadtripper named Sean Rowland stopped by to meet and greet the King and I.

I did a post on him as well.

He also has a website. Here's his link: http://www.stadiumandarenavisits.com/   which can also be found on my blog.

As for the game, if you call it that. The Mets looked like punching bags.

In reality, it was more like target practice.

The Diamondbacks behind Daniel Hudson who was making his major league debut looked like Dr. K in his hey day.

Hudson pitched 8 dominant innings and he picked his first major league hit too that drove in 2 runs.

The Diamondbacks hit 4 home runs.

Adam LaRoche hit two of them including a 415 foot double which was hit further than either of his two 3 run homers.

Stephen Drew hit one and catcher John Hester followed with a bomb of his own that even left the King in awe. What a shot that was.

The Mets went on to get destroyed 14-1!

On a positive note, there was an Oliver Perez sighting. He pitched 2 innings and he give up 5 hits and 4 runs.

What a week it was.

Stay tuned for the week ahead.

Thank you for reading.

I hope you got educated and amused at the same time.

That's the life of royalty.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

Royalty meets & greets another roadtripper, Sean Rowland at Citi Field on Mets Hall of Fame Induction Day!

Today at Citi Field the King & I were treated by another visitor. His name was Sean Rowland.

Sean put a post on his website, Stadiums and Arena Visits, that he was coming to Citi Field for the first time.

I made sure I e-mailed him and told him where we sit so he could pay us a visit and I told him I would do my best to give him an upgrade from where he said he sitting.

Sure enough, early in the game he stopped by to say hello and we spoke for an inning or so. He even got to witness the King doing his signature strikeout call. For more details about that, please see my previous post.

As I like to say, timing is everything.

He was with other people who were sitting in different parts of the ballpark he said.

I told him that he could come back with them if he wanted to.

Apparently, it was too much to round everybody up.

If he was by himself he would have stayed with us for rest of the game.

Regardless, it was very nice of him to drop by and say hello.

We were very grateful to add him to our road tripping fraternity.

He knows if and when he returns to Citi Field, Royalty will roll out the carpet from the get go.

The same goes for Yankee Stadium. It sounds like he's looking to go there next year based on what he has written on his website.

We'll be in touch so when the time comes I'll make sure it's a smooth and painless excursion.

As for Citi Field, the King asked him what he thought of the ballpark, he replied "it's beautiful."

I was happy to hear he was a satisfied customer.

As for his website, here's the link:

http://www.stadiumandarenavisits.com/

Please note his site is also on my blog roll where you can find some other great sites as well.

Please feel free to utilize these different sites to get different perspectives and tips from other fellow road trippers as well as insight about the local teams and the business of sports these days.

Thanks to my blog I've been able to expand my network of people with similar interests who like to travel around North America as well as other parts of the World to attend live sporting events.

I plan to track down as many of these people as I can.

In this day and age with all the technology at our disposal, we need to maximize our time to get the most out of our lives.

Life is short we need to help each other to enjoy the ride.

I'm a work in progress but with the help of these people we can all expand our horizons and make our future in life so much better.

The economy is slowly improving. The population is growing leaps and bounds. Competition is fierce. There are less jobs due to automation.

With that being said, don't let the facts get you down. Be proactive and do something about it. I am.

With my blog in place and viewership rising each and every day, I finally have a platform where I can tell people all the different places I've gone over the last 20-25 years on a regular basis.

I'm a seasoned vet when it comes to traveling around North America. I know the majority of the interstates as well as the secondary routes.

If you ever need assistance I'm more than happy to share my knowledge.

I strive on cutting cost and being efficient while still maximizing enjoyment.

In this day and age, I'm only a click away.

I have my Blackberry in hand at all times and I prefer to react right away.

Don't snooze, you will only lose.

Keep your head up, good things will happen for in due time.

I look forward to hearing  from those who echo my sentiments.

Thank you for reading.

Yours truly,

Prince Charming

2010 Mets Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

2010 Mets Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Today before the Mets played the Diamondbacks at Citi Field, they had a pregame ceremony honoring four key members of their great team in the mid-late 1980's.

The Mets inducted these great people into their own Hall of Fame.

They were as follows:

General Manager Frank Cashen who was the architect who build these great team through the farm system and by making key trades to add to the mix that he turned into a World Championship team back in 1986.

Manager Davey Johnson who led his team to 5 consecutive 90+ win seasons during his tenure as Met manager from 1984-1990.

Pitcher Dwight Gooden aka "Doc" he was potentially going to be one of the greateest pitchers in major league baseball history but unfortunately for him it never materialized due to off the field problems.

When he was on the mound in his first few years he was always worth the price of admission. He was so dominating that when he pitched you were always on the edge of your seat in awe of his incredible ability.

I was a teenager at the time. The Doctor was only a few years older than me. He came up at the tender age of 19 back in 1984. His first start was in Houston against the Astros.

He wound up being the National League Rookie of the Year.

In 1985, he went on to become a phenom. He went 24-4 with a 1.53 earned run average. He was absolutely a joy to watch pitch. He went on to win the National League Cy Young Award.

Everytime I saw Dr. K he almost always went all the way!

Sometimes he was "Goodenough" and/or "Good and Plenty".

It's a shame he never was able to be the same.

Rightfielder Darryl Strawberry like Doc had come to the big leagues with all the potential in the world.

Like Doc he too fell short of these great expectations for similar reasons.

I remember seeing the "Straw Man" as he was known during those days when he made his major league debut at Shea Stadium back on May 6, 1983 in person.

Mario Soto of the Cincinnati Reds dazzled the Mets by striking out 12 including Darryl 3 times as he went 0 for 4 that night.

The Mets eventually won that game in extra innings, 7-4!

Darryl despite not playing in the majors until May and even with a very slow start he still won the National League Rookie of the Year award.

Darryl had a reputation of hitting very long towering home runs that usually hit off the huge scoreboard in right field.

As a result, the diamond vision screen would show a pile of strawberries falling down and finishing with a logo of  Super Strawberry.

As a youngster, it was a sight to behold.

In retrospect, I always wondered how great these two ballplayers could have been if it wasn't for the their off the field problems.

Unfortunately we'll never know.

I want to personally thank them for supplying me with so many childhood memories. I know I'll never see that again.

In my book, number 16 & number 18 the uniform numbers they wore with the Mets would have be retired if it wasn't for the stupid mistakes they made their lives.

I hope the youth of today can use this guys as examples of what can happen to them if they wound up on the wrong path in life.

As I say, life is short, don't throw it away.

If and when you have a problem consult Royalty so you can get back on the right track to success.

Thank you for reading.

Gary Herman
